Women of Distinction: 17/09/2005 - 18/12/2005
Women of Distinction shows us the
world of Margaret of York and Margaret of Austria, two powerful
women who were at the helm in the Low Countries around the year
1500.
What concerned and interested them? How did they hold their ground
in what was very definitely a man’s world? What was their
bond with God, with power, art and science? A double portrait
of women from a time as fascinating as our own.
Women of Distinction shows a lot of work of renewing
artists of the period around the year 1500, such as the sculptor
Conrad Meit and the painters Bernard van Orley and Jan Gossaert.
Panels, sculptures, manuscripts and printed books, tapestries
and ethnographical curiosities show the luxury diversity of the
lifestyle at the court around the year 1500. Also famous actors
as Christine de Pizan, Boccaccio, Petrarca and Juan Luis Vives
are represented by books of the collections of the empresses.
The world-famous Iraqi-born architect Zaha Hadid has been commissioned
to provide an original and contemporary exhibition setting for
the 170 loans from several European institutions.
